Painter José Barata de Castilho

José Martins Barata was born in Castelo Branco in 1944.His full name is José Martins Barata de Castilho, since 2011, when he recovered his paternal grandfather's name, that his father had lost. He began to paint pictures to 18 years as self-taught and thought his vocation was the artist. At the end of high school, when he had to choose the course in university he thought to go to Fine Arts. But he was in the group of subjects that gave access to Economics with classifications that dispensed entrance examination and to change would have to make another preparation. He opted to go for Economics with the idea of one day to devote himself entirely to painting. He had many doubts that would have vocation to economist profession that barely knew and thought it was not compatible with arts. After all, he was very happy as an economist. Meanwhile he studied painting and also felt happy in this area. His biography here on right shows it. When asked how in his head he does reconcile activities as diverse, he responds that there is a common element in all of them, that is the need to be creative, rigorous and original. An economist, he says, learns at university paradigms, but this profession, to be efficient, requires to apply and study creatively, because social reality is dynamic and it is not the same as it was yesterday or what is written in some books.
